Summer days filled with vacations and relaxing poolside afternoons may be winding down, but that doesn’t mean relaxation and adventure have to end. Even as your PTO days slip away, you can still satisfy your travel bug and kick up your feet with a good book.
Books are one of an author's greatest gifts—they allow us to travel to different places and times without ever leaving home. Better yet, reading offers benefits far beyond entertainment. According to Psychology Today, reading can enhance our sense of well-being, help us make sense of the world, reduce symptoms of depression, increase empathy, and may even help us live longer—which means more vacations!
Now, imagine receiving a one-way ticket to Paris, travel funds worth thousands of dollars, and approval for a six-week vacation. I don't know about you, but I'd accept that offer immediately! Fortunately, The Paris Novel by Ruth Reichl gave me a glimpse into that experience and provided the mental vacation I didn't know I needed.
This novel takes readers on a sensory-filled journey through France—from breathtaking Parisian sights to the incredible flavors of French cuisine. Through the eyes of the main character, Stella, we're invited into a story of self-discovery and healing following the death of her mother.
After a lonely childhood and an even lonelier young adulthood, Stella steps into a completely different world filled with luxury, unexpected friendships, adventure, wonder, and the possibility of living a full life that trauma had once hidden from her. Her story is a beautiful reminder that when we choose courage and embrace the unfamiliar, incredible opportunities can exist on the other side of fear.
While the novel is full of beauty and joy, it's important to note that Stella's experiences with childhood abuse and neglect are discussed in Chapter 2. If those topics are triggering for you, consider skipping that chapter—you'll still be able to fully enjoy the rest of Stella's unforgettable adventure.
Extend the Experience
If you're feeling a little adventurous like I was, why let the journey end when you close the book? Here are a few ways to make the experience even more immersive:
- Create the atmosphere. Play a Paris ambiance video or French music in the background while you read.
- Savor the flavors. Gather your family, friends, or simply enjoy a meal on your own—just like Stella—and visit a French restaurant or prepare a French-inspired meal at home. Amélie's French Bakery & Café is a wonderful spot to enjoy a sweet treat while getting lost in a good book.
- Dream about your next adventure. Start planning a future trip, whether it's a Stella-inspired journey to Paris or another destination you've always wanted to explore.
After reading The Paris Novel—and hopefully adding a few of these sensory experiences—you just might feel refreshed enough to tide you over until your next real vacation.
Until then, remember that there's always another book waiting to take you somewhere new, all while supporting your mental and emotional well-being.
As the French would say, Bonne lecture! Happy reading!
